Ocean/Atmosphere Interactions:

Our research involves identifying modes of subtropical and extratropical ocean/atmosphere variability that have significant influences upon the El Niņo/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) system. As part of this work we have analyzed the dynamics of intraseasonal to interannual atmospheric variations that initiate ENSO events, as well as the dynamics of the surface and subsurface oceanic responses. Additional work has focused upon using advanced multivariate statistical techniques to identify causal linkages within the ocean/atmosphere system as a means of providing enhanced predictability associated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and other modes of coupled climate variability. We are also analyzing low-frequency climate variations to determine how ocean-atmosphere interactions modulate human-induced climate change and the implications these interactions have for the global climate sensitivity to anthropogenic forcing over the next 100 years.
