My Daily Entries This Week

Sat Jun 15

Had quite a "society'' day, as Rose did the cleaning.  I gave Millie a lesson, made some fudge, shampood my hair, read Marcus Aurelius (a wonderful little book), saw Nazimova at the matin\'{e}e, rode home in an automobile, and went to a dance in the evening.  The play was amusing - un peu risqu\'{e}, perhaps, but then, I am to be twenty next week, so I can begin to see things.  It was not really bad at all, only clever, and Nazimova is simply fascinating. Ella and I had some ping-pong pictures taken before the play. It will be fun to see how they come out. My plume came and it makes the hat simply beautiful. We all went to the Slav. Alliance and had a jolly time, although I felt a wee bit "swindlich'' so did not enjoy it quite as much as usual!

Sun June 16

A heavenly day, and I walked down, feeling very 'andsome in my new black hat.  The Bishop from Japan preached and he has a most beautiful speaking voice.  I enjoy listening to the intonations of it as much as if he were a singer.  After church Mr. Aldrich, who was at service, came around and invited Ella and Mr. French (who had asked me to walk a little) and me up to the Lucerne to luncheon.  Mr. Duras also walked up with us.  He went up to the house, and so took word to the folks of my plans. I felt a little doubt about going, but as there were four of us, I could see no harm.  We had a very late luncheon, as we went up to see the big fire, and then had music and fun till six.  Mr. Aldrich wanted us all to go to hear the Kaltenborn concert.  I "haed me doots'' but telephoned to Mila.  She was out but Chas. came and gave his permission.  So we went.  We had a delightful evening, as the program was fine, but Mila was as silent as a clam when I came home.

Mon June 17

The storm broke this morning and cleared the air.  Mila told me point-blank that she did not want me to go out with "that man'' again. So I promised not to and she promised to love me again.  Of course there is no harm but "c'est un monde m\'{e}chant'' and so it's better to be careful.  All the same we had a nice time.  But mon Dieu! I paid for it! At noon a letter came from Duras -- the most dreadful, brutal thing ever penned by man I am sure -- such language! such abuse! I shook like a leaf for two hours after, and shall not recover soon.  I think he must be insane! for after all, what right has he to act as censor over my conduct, and if he wanted to criticize he could have done so face to face and not taken cowardly refuge behind a sheet of paper and a pen, to say things which he would not dare to in my presence.  I wrote an answer immediately, which, I think he will not forget soon, but that did not take the hurt away. I felt like a stricken creature all day.

Tues Jun 18

Mila suspected something was wrong, but I had determined not to show her the letter as it would hurt her more than me even. But he had the impudence to write her a note in a similar vein, so lest she should misunderstand, I told her about it.  She was very indignant at his cowardly attack and said she would see him and make him realize his mistake.  It seems too dreadful that a man should forget all he knows of my character from three months' association with me, and judge me by one circumstance, of which he knows nothing.  There can be no possible excuse for his striking such a blow at me after having accepted the hospitality of our home all day and evening!  Well, the experience teaches me two things -- not to expect a man to be generous just because he is in love, and that no good time is worth risking even the appearance of propriety.  Washed and ironed all day and in the evening, Edith Sev. called.

Wed Jun 19

Today is my 20th birthday -- and my experiences in the past year have prepared me to step into womanhood.  It is the first birthday which has ever been tinged with unhappiness -- not a very nice record for a man who pretends to care for me! Well. I thank Heaven I have never cared for him, for if I had -- and he had struck me such blow, I should never have recovered. I received only sensible gifts -- clothing, etc. which were just what I wanted; except a charming one from Dr. Urban. It was a large box full of banana's with a pound of Huyler's [chocolates] in the middle!  We laughed heartily and I was very pleased with the funny gift.  Mother was very ill all morning, but I went to Miss Thursby's for a lesson and in spite of no practice for a week, it was not very bad.  In the evening Miss Graham called and sang for us; we had a delightful time.

Thurs Jun 20

No apology from that "person''. So I wrapped up the few little things he has ever given me together with his picture and Mila took them back to him. She did not see him, and I am glad, for she has been so nervous and upset about the matter that she would have broken down!  What a lot of pain one selfish, jealous man can inflict!  Worked hard cleaning the kitchen floor all morning and in the P.M. Dr. Urban, Chas and I went to Central Park to play tennis. The day was perfect -- a lovely breeze and a veiled sun, so we enjoyed a pleasant afternoon's sport and we are going over every Thursday afternoon, -- at least we think we are. Have had a lovely letter from my darling Mrs. C. She is resting and wants me to lunch with her next week. What an angel that woman is! I cannot imagine anything much worse than to lose her regard for me, for it is one of my treasured possessions.

Fri June 21

Spent the morning in the Dental Chair with Charlie as D.D.S. It was an awful filling and he worked hard for 3 hrs. I think he will be a very successful dentist, for he is neat and quick and careful, and has a cheerful business-like way of working.  And then he is rather good to look at and in a dentist especially, that makes a difference.  The professors all seem to take a great interest in him. After luncheon Mr. Novotny called and he, Rose and I spent the afternoon up at Columbia, going thro' most of the buildings.  They are very beautiful structures, altho' the college spirit which exists at N.Y.U. seems to be lacking, probably because there are so many "outside'' students.  Then we took a long walk down Riverside and "Clarence'' took us out to supper at a dear little open air restaurant "Unter der Linden'' where we sat till 9.30, and then came home.  It was a delightful afternoon, and I hope he enjoyed it as much as we. A letter from Duras, bewailing his own shortcomings but without an apology, so it counts for "nil''.
