In Darfur, an estimated 500 people a day are murdered by the Janjaweed, a Sudanese government-backed militia dedicated to ethnic cleansing by murder, starvation, and rape. Approximately 400,000 people have died so far, and 2.5 million individuals have been left homeless. In spite of the fact that the United Nations Security Council authorized a strong peacekeeping force for Darfur, the Janjaweed remain active.

We created Dollars for Darfur because we got tired of “waiting on the world to change.” Dollars for Darfur is a national high school fundraising effort to stop genocide in Darfur (all funds raised go directly to Save Darfur, an international coalition in Washington, DC). We decided to use Facebook and MySpace to spread the word and organize fundraising events at high schools around the country. We hope you and your friends will join us. We have a chance to let the people of Darfur know we care.

Here’s the Challenge:

There are 22,000 high schools registered with Facebook. With the help of MySpace networking, if each school raised $50 the total would be over 1 million dollars!

Better yet:

There are about 15.5 million public and private 9-12 high school students. If only an eighth of these students gave just one dollar, we could raise nearly 2 million dollars!

Our Goal:

To raise $200,000 for Darfur.
