My Daily Entries This Week

Sun Jun 2

I saw "Rose of the Rancho'' last night with a clever little actress, Frances Starr in the lead.  She was very sweet and charming, and has many accomplishments, and yet there seemed to me a rather cloying sweetness about the whole play.  The situations were all so prearranged to give effective chance to the star; indeed, the whole seemed to me a duplicate of "Pretty sister of Jos\'{e}'' in which Maude Adams  played 2 years ago, only the latter, I think had stronger characterization.  Yet it failed completely, while the "Rose'' has been running all season. Mr. Aldrich invited Ella and me to dinner between services today. We enjoyed it, as we talked music, but should have preferred to had we eaten in the public dining room; for altho' there were four of us, one cannot be too careful.  Mr. Duras and Otto spent the evening and we had a jolly time.

Mon June 3

Expected to spend the day quietly at home, But at 9 o'clock Miss Griffin sent for me to take charge of the Bohemian Department at the library while one of her assistants was away.  I shall enjoy it very much, to say nought of the additional joy of earning some extra money. My head swam at first from all the things I had to learn, but after I "buckled to'' it proved not to be so complicated.  The work is delightful and the environment ditto.  I should think that girls with leisure time would enjoy studying for library work, as it gives one such a splendid idea of literature; but the pay is wretchedly small, about a dollar a day in the beginning, and the requirements for even such a position are very great.  Library work seems to me to be the most underpaid of all the city positions. Had planned to go to Ella's in the evening to hear Mr. Dadmun sing, but Francis called, so couldn't.  Then Mila kept me fussing over my clothes for tomorrow till I was dead with weariness and it was midnight when we got to bed.

Tue-Wed June 4-5

Went to the library from 9 to 12.  What a cinch it is! About 3 people came in during the whole morning. At 3 o'clock Francis and I went down to meet his mother and in a beautiful big motor car we were whisked away to the University.  And then people say the comforts of life do not count.  I think I could put up with a good deal from a man who could keep me in motorcars all my life.  And yet, I suppose if I did not like Frank, I should not have enjoyed the trip at all.  As it was the day was fine and I enjoyed it immensely.  After supper at the "Frat'' house we all sat and chatted till 9.30; Frank telling me the "story of his life'' through some letters which made the "Englishwoman's L. Letters'' seem tame.  What chumps some girls are!  At eleven we went over to the "gym'' to the Senior Ball, where we all danced till 4.  Poor Frank had to rush way down to 161st to scare up some flowers as his florist had disappointed him.  That rather upset him and then when I carefully evaded his requests "to go out for a stroll'', he accused me of being "no sport'' and "a girl without spirit.'' Well, those letters opened my eyes to one or two things and I think that the longer I keep real sentimentality out of our intercourse, the better time I shall have.  Frank talks quite freely enough, when I  do keep him within bounds, thanks!  We all had breakfast at the "House'' at 10.30, and came home right after.  Well, I had a jolly good time and college life is a delightful one! I felt that I must show Frank some appreciation of his kindness so gave him his long-promise of picture.  He walked down to the library with me, where I stayed till 5.30. The Cuban gentleman (whose name I have forgotten, and can't seem to find out) came in late in the afternoon and walked home with me.  I am afraid the neighbors will be scandalized for I come home every few hours with another man. "Vic'' [Duras] came after supper and wanted me to go to hear "Bohemian Girl'' but I had to go to the library, so couldn't.  Went home at 9 and to bed early. Had a note from Frank saying that he had won the $50 prize for Psychology.  That's splendid, for Frank goes out so much that I don't see how he can keep up so well in his studies.  His record is nearly all A's.

Thurs Jun 6

Was at the library all day.  They have a "Collection of the World's Best Literature'' there - about 25 vol. which I have been looking over; and in which I find names which I never even heard of.  And yet I think that I am better acquainted with author's names, if not their works, than the average girl.  T'is only a very great fool could grow vain about what he knoweth.  And to think that I scarcely knew of the existence of Marcus Aurelius before I saw the "Meditations'' on Mrs. C's table.  And in this "Library'' they speak of that little volume as "perhaps the greatest contribution of the pagan world to civilized Christianity'' and as "standing next to the gospel in its influence on men's minds.''

Fri Jun 7

Went to the Library at nine but at 11 Father relieved me and I went to Miss Thursby's for a lesson.  It was a fairly good one considering that I have not uttered a note all week.  The charming little Spanish blonde, Mrs. Buell, was there and she invited me to call.  I shall do so, as she is so interesting and worth following up.  Returned to the Lib. at 2. o'clock and met Mrs. Mokrej\v{s}. She and Mr. M. have just returned from a 5 days tramp thro' Conn. and they must have had a glorious time.  The[y] are sure to do the unusual thing. Church rehearsal was interesting. The girls greeted me as a long-lost child and Ella and I had so much to talk about that we didn't know where to begin; all because I had been absent on Tuesday.  After rehearsal Mr. Williamson took Ella and me for a long spin thro' the park and just after we got to my house the machine refused to run.  Mr. W. worked over it for half an hour and finally coaxed her into behaving - the minx! He says she is as capricious as a woman.
