My Daily Entries This Week

Sat Jun 8

Hustled like mad to get the house cleaned by 11.30. At twelve was at the Libr. Had a nice quiet afternoon, as very few people came in.  The Cuban was there and talked to Papa and me.  Father says he talks too much and that I mustn't believe all he says.  Well, let him talk, if he enjoys it. There's no harm done! Read parts of Tolstoi's "Anna Karenina'' and it is certainly strong, but not very pleasant, I imagine. Felt very tired when evening came. I enjoyed the week's work, but it also made me realized what an interesting and easy girlhood I am having - following my own tastes and doing the things I love; meeting interesting people all the time; and all with the loving sympathy of my family. I could not have more even if we were very rich. Mr. and Mrs. Mockrej\v{s} and Mr. Duras called and we spent a pleasant evening. We are going to get up a picnic for 4th of July.

Sun June 9

Mother had a terrible spell this morning.  She fairly raved until she was given a sleeping powder and put to bed. This illness of hers is simply an enigma, for in the afternoon and evening she sat up quietly, and talked and went about the house quite as usual. We had our last afternoon service today and sang an exquisite setting of the 23rd psalm.  Found out, after service that, since I was absent when the names were called, I cannot sing at the Fish wedding.  I am so disappointed, as "I need the money.'' Expected Duras over to supper, and when he failed to appear I was very angry. Lo! just after we finished he floated in, and had to take what was left.  In the evening went to the Altman concert. A hopelessly amateurish affair.

Mon Jun 10

Went to the library, but found that they did not need me. Am very sorry as I wanted to put $50 away for this winter's savings. But I am afraid a big bank account is not my style, for I need too many things. Indeed, I think the whole fifty will disappear before the summer is over; and what's the use of saving money if you must go without things you really want?  Ella came to the Libr. and then came over to luncheon with me.  She heard me talking Bohemian to the Cuban and was quite awe-struck at my linguistic accomplishments!  If she only realized how many mistakes I make! She is so amusing!  She went at 1.30 to sing a funeral and I spent a long lazy afternoon, reading "Lady of Quality''. In the evening Frank Sov. called and he, Chas. and I went down to Edith \v{S}evcik's where we spent a pleasant evening. Ah fors \`{e} lui!

Tues Jun 11

Met Ella in the Park and we went over to see whether her net was still there, after two years.  It was, to our surprise, so we are going to spend as much time as we can in the Park playing.  Ella took me home to luncheon and we had a cozy little time until 2 o'clock.  Went home to change my clothes and then shopped all afternoon.  Went down to Teddy Geary's for my hat.  She has charge of a very fashionable milliner's shop, and make the dearest sales-lady imaginable; for, of course, every hat she tries on looks charming. Ordered a ten-dollar plume from Otto, and I hope it will be a beauty, as I feel very extravagant.  Still I have always wanted it and it will last. Dr. Urban called last night and we had a jolly evening.  He invited Rose to the Slav. All. party for Sat. and she, little goose, was so foolish about accepting that she almost refused. Because he had sisters, forsooth!! She needs experience, that girl!

Wed Jun 12

Practised pianissimo and went to Miss Thursby's for a lesson; through a misunderstanding I should have come at 11.  Consequently, I had a very short lesson, but a fairly good one.  Miss Benda (Ma\v{\j}eska's niece) told me of the Green Acre matter, how often one had to sing, and something about the place, and said perhaps I would hear from the accompanyist.  Tried to read Tennyson in the afternoon, but fell asleep after the final ravings of "Maud''. Somehow, English poetry strikes no responsive chord in my bosom. In the evening, Mr. D. called and we had a quiet evening.

Thurs June 13

Mila found out about the spot on my brown skirt and was furious at my carelessness, and said things. I am afraid I am careless and yet I realize and appreciate all she does for me.  I suppose I have been spoiled; yet it seems unfair that they should blame me for that. It really makes me ill, tho' to have Mila angry at me.  Washed and ironed all day, which helped me to forget.  Besides, I want to go out Sat. and I know I couldn't leave the wash for Rose.  Mila came home very tired, but we managed to make up, and trimmed my black hat all evening. Oh! elle est si bonne et si habile!

Fri Jun 14

Mama was dreadfully nervous but tried to quiet herself by working and succeeded. She did all the ironing, while I trimmed over Mila's last summer's hat. It cleaned beautifully and I fixed it up so that it looks very chic.  It has rained steadily all day, which accounts partly for Mother's "dumps.''   Had a short easy rehearsal for two weeks' work as Leopold, I suppose, wants to go off on a jaunt.  He is a charming lad at times. I can't imagine why I do not get smitten.  Perhaps because he is a blonde!  Mr. French rode up with me and Ella and took me home. He is rather interesting.
