Novartis Chemistry Lectureship Award

Professor Porco has received a Novartis Chemistry Lectureship Award for 2009. This award has been created to honor individuals for outstanding contributions in natural product synthesis and/or the development of synthetic methodology. The focus of the lectures is on synthetic organic chemistry to enhance the exposure of the Novartis chemical community to cutting edge chemistry. Congratulations John!

Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award

Professor Porco has been named a 2009 Arthur C. Cope Scholar! He is one of ten scholars who is being recognized for their oustanding contribution to the field of organic chemistry. This award includes a $40,000 unrestricted research grant, a certificate, and $5,000. Congratulations Prof. Porco!!

Astrazeneca Graduate Research Fellowship

Huan Cong has recieved a graduate fellowship from AstraZeneca for the academic year 2008-2009. Congratulations Huan!

Lichtin Award for Excellence in Research

Ji Qi is the recipient of the Lichtin Award for the academic year 2007-2008. This award was established in honor of Norman Lichtin, a distinguished  research scientist and former Chair of the Chemistry Department. The award recognizes students that are distinguished by their exceptional contributions to  chemical research in their doctoral studies. Congrats Ji!

Dr. Chong Han Our beloved Chong defended his thesis in March 2008, and he is the tenth doctorate of the Porco Group. Chong will continue to work wonders in organometallic chemistry as a postdoctoral fellow in Prof. Buchwald's lab at MIT. Congrats Chong!

Dr. Baudouin Gerard Baudouin defended his thesis in October 2007, and he is the ninth doctorate of the Porco Group. Baudouin has accepted a position and will begin work at the Broad Institute in Cambridge, MA. Congratulations Baudouin!

Sugata Ray Memorial Award

Chong Han is one of recipients of the Sugata Ray Memorial Award for International Students for the academic year 2006-2007. This award was established by the Ray family in memory of their son, Sugata Ray, a former graduate student in the Chemistry Department, to recognize an international Ph.D. candidate each year who excels in his or her graduate studies. Research, academic performance, teaching, and service contributions to the Department are all considered in selection of the awardee. Congratulations Chong!

Spring Graduation 2007

Dr. Jianglong Zhu and Dr. Sujata Bardhan

Jianglong and Sujata defended their theses in April 2007 and are the seventh and eighth doctorates of the Porco Group. Jianglang is going to NY to work with Prof. Danishefsky, and Sujata will be working as a post-doc for Wyeth Research. Congratulations to both of you !

Dr. Shun Su

Shun defended his thesis in March 2007 and he is the sixth doctorate of the Porco Group. He is going to enjoy the sun in California. Congratulations Shun and best of luck with your post-doc.

Dr. Xiaoguang Lei

Xiaoguang Lei is the fifth doctorate of the Porco Research Group. Xiaoguang successfully defended his thesis in November of 2006. Congratulations Xiaoguang and good luck in NY!!!

Ji Qi is the 2006 recipient of the Novartis Graduate Fellowship

Ji is this year's recipient of the Novartis Graduate Fellowship in Organic Chemistry for Minorities and Women. Congratulations Ji !!!

Dan Bruggemeyer receives the 2005-2006 Beckman Foundation Scholars award

Congratulations to Dan Bruggemeyer on receiving a 2005-2006 Beckman Foundation Scholars award! Dan is currently a junior chemistry major at Boston University and also a member of The University Professors Program at Boston University (UNI). Each student named as a Beckman Scholar performs research activities during two academic years and full-time over two summers (ten weeks each summer). The award also includes a trip to California to the Beckman Scholars Annual Research Symposium, where each student presents his/her research. Jianglong Zhu receives the 2004-2005 Feldman Award

Jianglong Zhu is the recipient of the Feldman Award for the academic year 2004-2005. The Feldman Fund was established by the Feldman family to memorialize Julius Feldman, who served for many years as Associate Chairman of the Chemistry Department and who took a special interest in the welfare of graduate students. The Feldman Award recognizes outstanding accomplishments in research, teaching or service. The award is a cash prize of $1,000. Congratulations Jianglong!

Xiaoguang Lei is one of recipients of the Sugata Ray Memorial Award for International Students for the academic year 2003-2004. This award was established by the Ray family in memory of their son, Sugata Ray, a former graduate student in the Chemistry Department, to recognize an international Ph.D. candidate each year who excels in his or her graduate studies. Research, academic performance, teaching, and service contributions to the Department are all considered in selection of the awardee. The award is a cash prize of $1,500. Congratulations Xiaoguang!

The Porco Group has moved!!!

In April 2005, the Porco Group labs moved from 590 Commonwealth Avenue to the 8th floor of the new Life Science and Engineering Building (LSEB) at 24 Cummington St. We are all very excited to be in this brand new state-of-the-art facility! To see pictures of us moving into our new lab, click here.

Dr. Xiang Wang

Xiang Wang is the third doctorate of the Porco Research Group. Xiang successfully defended his thesis in February of 2005. Congratulations Xiang!!!
