Professor Bifano's research focuses on design and manufacturing of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) for optical applications. Most recently, he has engineered a class of deformable mirror systems that improve resolution in advanced telescopes, microscopes, and ophthalmoscopes, and that allow modulation of optical wavefronts for communication and speckle reduction.

His students work on design and modeling of new kinds of wavefront control devices, manufacturing technology development for MEMS optical components, real time wavefront control systems, and applications of adaptive optics and wavefront modulation in communication, imaging, and medical instrumentation
