Professor Bifano: Research

Activities in the Precision Engineering Research Laboratory (PERL), focus on design, manufacturing, and use of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) for optical applications. Our lab pioneered development of a class of deformable mirror systems that improve resolution in telescopes, microscopes, and ophthalmoscopes, and that allow modulation of optical wavefronts for communication and beam forming.

PERL students work on design and modeling of new kinds of wavefront control devices, manufacturing technology development for MEMS optical components, real time wavefront control systems, and applications of adaptive optics and wavefront modulation in communication, imaging, and medical instrumentation
