The Boston University Biology Department Workshop helps design and fabricate experimental research equipment and prototypes. The workshop also diagnoses and repairs existing lab and field equipment as well as performing a variety of maintenance jobs in Departmental offices and labs, excluding building issues (i.e. electrical plumbing).
There's no need for detailed drawings, most of the projects are built, from simple sketches on napkins, the back of envelopes, or drawn on the material itself. The shop has the ability to read CAD/CAM Files. Google Sketchup is a nice free 3D drawing program.
The workshop has the ability to machine stainless steel, aluminum, plastics, and many other materials.
The workshop can be the first line in repairs of most lab equipment. Before any piece of equipment is taken in for repair, the equipment must be cleaned and decontaminated if necessary. Repair work will be completed quicker if you have:
Thermoplastic, arc, spot, and solvent welding are done on site. Specialized welding, Aluminum, TIG, MIG, etc., is provided for a fee through BU SIF (BU SIF Rate) Boston University Customers: $30/hr.
The workshop runs on a first come, first serve basis. At peak times, (usually early summer and fall) the wait can be several weeks, depending on the complexity of the work requested, so please plan accordingly. Occasionally there are urgent needs. The workshop will try to accommodate these issues, on a case by case basis.
There are no labor charges for Biology department Faculty, or lab staff. However, each lab or person requesting a project is responsible for their own materials and hardware.
