A senior lecturer in the journalism department at Boston University, I teach photo and multimedia journalism to both graduate and undergraduate students. Lighting, digital workflow, portfolio development, web creation and multimedia stories are key components of my classes. I began my career working for a newspaper, the Eagle Tribune in North Andover, just North of Boston, where I was part of a team that won a 1988 Pulitzer Prize. I've photographed for Getty Images, Gamma, Gamma Liaison and currently shoot for Polaris Images.
My students focus on building skill-sets in visual journalism. They learn to tell a visual story and to produce professional quality images that capture key story-telling moments. My students produce in-depth multimedia stories with still images, video and audio. They edit, produce and publish their stories on a website that they create - all while using thoughtful workflow and are guided by the highest industry standards and ethics.
Building a career as a journalist in the 21st century requires the same level of commitment and passion as it ever did. It also requires a never ending engagement with current methods and technology to produce important stories and to reach wide audiences.
