Michael Field was Assistant Provost at Boston University from 1996 to 2008.   He holds degrees of Bachelor of Science from the United States Naval Academy, Licence ès Sciences Politiques (Etudes Internationales) from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, University of Geneva, Switzerland, and Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science from Boston University. He has held appointments as Professor of Naval Science at Boston University, Visiting Professor of Naval Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and lecturer in History and Political Science at Boston University.            

  As Assistant Provost, Michael worked on academic facilities planning, environmental health and safety, laboratory animal research compliance programs, and a variety of student-related issues for the eleven schools and colleges, many academic centers and institutes, and the Humphrey Fellowship Program on Boston University's Charles River Campus.  Accredited by the U. S. Green Building Council as a Green Building professional in 2007, he was one of the University's first green campus advocates, working to promote environmentally sustainable operations and communications within the University.   He has also guided the management re-engineering of several of the University's academic support units.

  Before coming to Boston University, Michael was an officer and fighter pilot in the United States Navy.   He has extensive experience in aircraft carrier-based flight operations with tours in the F-4 Phantom and F-14 Tomcat fighter aircraft, including service as Commanding Officer of Fighter Squadron 41.   He also has experience in defense policy planning in the Pentagon in Washington, DC, and in carrier battle group operations as Operations Officer in USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, CVN-69. Additionally, while with "IKE", he led an 18-month, $325 million complex overhaul of the ship in the yards of Northrop Grumman Newport News Shipbuilding.   Between retiring from active duty in the rank of Captain and his appointment as Assistant Provost, Michael served as Executive Director of a planning project for a residential public school for at-risk youth called the Boston University Charter School, and as Assistant Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Boston University.
