How Many Marathons Have You Run?

Marathon running, actually, as it turns out, is not as common as golfing or fishing. Few people run a single marathon in their lifetime (I've heard that it's about 1% of Americans), let alone more than one in a year (or a weekend).

When people ask me how many marathons I've run, I'm often a little bashful or even embarrassed. But here's the thing: I know people (and I look up to people) who have run three, five, even ten times as many marathons as I have. Truth.

As of November 2024, I've completed 82 (live) marathons in 38 US States; one each in Canada, England, and Germany:

twelve in Massachusetts
eight in Washington
five in Vermont
four each in North Carolina, Maine and New Hampshire
three each in Illinois and Rhode Island
two each in South Carolina, Virginia, Connecticut, Indiana and Pennsylvania
one each in Idaho, Georgia, Texas, West Virginia, California, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, Arkansas, Maryland, Wyoming, Ohio, Michigan, Nevada, Wisconsin, New York, Alabama, New Mexico, Arizona, New Jersey, Ontario, Lousiana, and Colorado
one in Ontario, Canada
one in London, United Kington
one in Berlin, Germany
South Dakota (Sioux Falls Marathon 2021, 2024) was cancelled due to extreme weather, but I'll be back!

I've also completed several "back-yard" or virtual marathons, and I've put in some long miles pacing friends who were attempting or completing stupid long runs, but I only including in my count officially sanctioned events with a measured course and a timekeeper.
