DAVID STAROBINSKI

SUBMITTED TO THE SENATE OF
THE TECHNION - ISRAEL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
IYAR 5759 HAIFA MAY 1999

The research thesis was done under the supervision of Prof. Moshe Sidi in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.

The generous financial help of the Technion as well as of the Miriam and Aaron Gutwirth Scholarship Fund and Intel Israel Corp. is gratefully acknowledged.

I want to express my sincere gratitude to the supervisor of this thesis, Prof. Moshe Sidi, a world-class researcher and personality of high distinction. The scientific achievements made during this work, were all made possible by his interest and dedication. I am indebted to him for his devoted guidance and warm support.

During my graduate studies, I had the privilege of serving as the teaching assistant of Prof. David Schieber who exposed me to the beauty of the Electromagnetism Theory. I would like to express my deep gratitude to him for the considerable knowledge he granted me and for cultivating me as a scientist.

I am also very grateful to Prof. Israel Cidon and Prof. Raphael Rom for their valuable advice and for having given me the opportunity to work under their auspices, as a summer intern, in the Research Laboratories of Sun Microsystems Corp.

I am especially thankful to Prof. Ofer Zeitouni for fruitful discussion which enlightened me as to the close relationship between a representation with a sum of exponentials and a Laplace transform representation.

Thanks also to my colleague, Amir Karniel, for his useful comments and suggestions.

Finally, I owe a great debt of thanks to my beloved wife, parents and family who have always stood by me and supported me. This work is dedicated to them.
