Instructions for preparation of manuscripts

in “approximate JME format”

using Scientific Word or Scientific Workplace

(These instructions assume that the version is swp5.0 or higher)

Upgraded September 2009.

Important note: effective with the January 2008 issue, the Journal of Monetary Economics moved to new, larger format for its pages. Final manuscript preparation following these instructions will allow authors to view their manuscript in something close to the new format.

Installing SW ingredients

There are three ingredients that you need to install within Scientific Word.

First, there is a style file, sw20nhej2.sty, which must be placed in the subdirectory "SW macros".  In a typical installation of SW version 5.5, this subdirectory is called C:\swp55\TCITeX\TeX\LaTeX\SWmacros. By clicking on the following link, you can get zip file with this first ingredient file1 then save it as sw20nhej2.sty in the correct directory.

Second, there is a class file, sw20nhej2.cst, which must be placed in the subdirectory "[Special]".  In a typical installation of SW version 5.5, this subdirectory is called C:\swp55\Styles\[Special] By clicking on the following link, you can get zip file with this first ingredient file2 then save it as sw20nhej2.cst in the correct directory. [Note: in some installations of Scientific Word, one must place this file in the directory C:\swp55\styles\article].

Third, there is a JME shell, Journal of Monetary Economics.shl, which must be placed in the subdirectory that contains shells. In a typical installation of SW version 5.5, this subdirectory would be named c:\swp55\shells\articles\sw. By clicking on the following link, you can get zip file with this first ingredient file3 then save it as Journal of Monetary Economics.shl in the correct directory.

Creating a new document

In SW, go to FILES and choose the option NEW

Under the option SHELL DIRECTORIES, choose ARTICLE

Under the option SHELL FILES, choose Journal of Monetary Economics

You will get a new document: save it with a new name (like test.tex). If you typeset this new document, you should see the material that is printed here

Make sure that the current style is “C:\swp50\styles\[Special]\SW20NHEJ2.cst”, by going to FILES and choosing the option STYLE.

Converting your existing document to draft JME style.

Step 1:  Entering the body of your document

Don’t just convert your original document!

Delete the material in the body of the new document and copy the contents of your existing document (mydoc.tex)  into the new file (named test.tex above).

Save your new document

Step 2: Modify the front matter.

Copy the front matter from your existing document (mydoc.tex) into your new document (test.tex).

Save your new document

When you typeset this document, the result should be a double spaced manuscript with 12 point type and line numbering.

Converting your draft document to final JME style.

Step 1: Getting started

Open your draft document (test.tex) and then save a copy -- that you will convert to final style – with a new name, say testfinal.tex

Step 2: Set the typesize

Select: Typeset

Select: Options and Packages

Select: Class Options

Select: Body point text size = 10 point

Step 2: Set the line spacing

Select: Typeset

Select: Options and Packages

Select: Package Options tab

Select: Setspace package

Select: click the Modify button to change the "currently selected options for the package setpace" from doublespacing to singlespacing

Step 3: Change the margins

Select: Typeset

Select: Preamble

The standard margin for draft mode is set with the statement:

    \geometry{left=1in,right=1in,top=1.25in,bottom=1in}

 Change this statement to

    \geometry{left=.65in,right=0.65in,top=0.85in,bottom=0.85in}
