PHONETICS FOR SINGERS I

Required Material

The two required textbooks are available at the Boston University Bookstore (Barnes and Nobles at BU). Both books will be used in class. For the first weeks of the course only the IPA book will be used.

Course Description

Phonetics for Singers is a required course for students pursuing a major in voice performance. The course is the first part of a two semester introduction to phonetics and the International Phonetic Alphabet [IPA]. In the course the basics of Italian, German, French, and English lyric diction as used for singing will be studied.

This particular course covers an introduction to general terms and concepts relating to phonetics, detailed study of the IPA, Italian and German diction.

Course Requirements

Participants complete written homework assignments and take quizzes on a regular basis. The knowledge of IPA is cumulative and quizzes will cover more and more material. In class speaking and singing exercises will help the correct phonation and recognition of speech sounds. Participants will have an opportunity to sing in class. A written final exam during the official exam period will be held.

SONG LITERATURE I

Course Description

The course description will be furnished later. The content of the course has just been altered and a new outline and syllabus are in preparation.

Course Requirements

Participants will prepare written assignments. In addition each person will perform three times during the semester. The songs will be assigned and a song preparation guide has to be filled out. The third performance will be in public during the Song Literature Recital.

The content of the course will be presented in blocks that are self contained. At the end of a block a written quizz and listening exam will be given. The listening will be assigned at the start of a block. The grade will be calculated by the results of the written assignments, quizzes, and the performances including preparation. There will be a written and listening final exam during the official exam period.

ADVANCED PERFORMANCE SEMINAR GERMAN

Required Material

There are no required materials for this course. A course packet will be handed out. It contains all materials needed for the course.

Course Description

The APS German includes a review of German IPA and rules. Transcription of German texts into IPA will be practiced and the participants will do transcribing exercises.

The performance component of the course will give each participant three opportunities to perform in class. Each performance is accompanied by an IPA transcription and a translation of the text furnished by the student. Working in front of and with the entire class we will explore the difficulties that the particular song/aria presents and speak and practice in detail about how to remedy the difficulties.

The class will also study 150 German musical terms and translate them into English or Italian.

Course Requirements

Three performances - as scheduled in the class calendar - including submission of word-for-word translation and IPA transcription. Two terms quizzes, one given as midterm, the second one at the end of the session.

A graduate student majoring in collaborative piano will be providing the accompaniment for the class. The music for the performances should be given to that person at least one week before the performance. IPA transcription and word-for-word translation should be handed in one class prior to the performance.

Course Description
