MET CS 770 - Spring 2003 - Homework 2 (Due March 17, 2003)

• Read this along with HW1.
• Requirements
  • To develop a system that will handle registration, carry out the matching, and notify participants. The web-server is a separate system.
    • To record the details of volunteers, including the skills and the address of each one.
    • To record the time that each volunteer deposits in the system.
    • To transfer from the web-server details of volunteers and the time they are depositing.
  • To handle the recording of opportunities for voluntary activity.
    • To record the details of member voluntary organizations.
    • To record the needs of voluntary organizations for help.
    • To record the needs of individuals (including volunteers) for help.
  • To match up donors and recipients of voluntary activity and record the results.
    • To match a volunteer with suitable voluntary activities in his or her area.
    • To match a voluntary activity with suitable volunteers in the same area.
    • To record every match between volunteer and activity.
    • To notify volunteers of matches.
    • To notify voluntary organizations of matches.
    • To record the success of each match and to produce a volunteering agreement for each successful match.
  • To produce statistics of the number of volunteers and opportunities and the amount of time deposited.
• Interaction Diagrams

          One of the use cases should have a name such as Record an individual's request for help. Here is a short summary description:

  • Individuals can request help from MetPool. This includes volunteers requesting help themselves. The MetPool administrator first enters the details of the individual. If this is an existing volunteer, then the name is entered and the details are displayed. If there is more than one person with the same name, then a list is displayed with the first part of the address, and the administrator selects the right one. If this is not an existing volunteer, then the name, address and telephone number are entered. It is important that the zip code is entered, as it is required to match this request with volunteers in the same area. Details of the help required are then entered: a text summary of the help and a code that describes the type of help wanted, for example DEC for decorating, GAR for garden work, or PET for pet care. A start and finish date for when the help is required are also entered. Draw the interaction diagrams.
  • When the volunteer registers with MetPool on the MetPool web server, he or she goes through the following interaction:
    • Go to the MetPool home page. Request the MetPool registration page. Complete the form and submit it. The server validates the data. If there is any error, the form is redisplayed with the contents as entered by the volunteer and with the incorrect field highlighted. If there is no error, the data is submitted to the database. Draw the interaction diagrams.
• Activity Diagrams
  • In the MetPool system, draw up the process for matching a volunteer with voluntary organizations in his or her area and producing a volunteering agreement. Assume that a volunteer cannot be matched with more than one voluntary organization at a time, but that a voluntary organization will use many volunteers, up to a set limit.
  • After analyzing the above process, it is decided that there will be a daily batch process to match volunteers with organizations. It is decided that an organization can have a maximum of three candidates in interview at any one time. The batch process is drawn up as a use case, Match candidates daily batch, that includes two other use cases, Notify volunteer and Notify organization. The primary flow through the use case is as follows:
    • Get next volunteer who is available.
    • Get first matching organization seeking a volunteer who does not have three interviews active.
    • Mark a volunteer as notified.
    • Increment the number of interviews scheduled for the organization.
    • Notify the volunteer.
    • Notify the organization.
    • If there are volunteers left to consider, repeat the above steps

                Produce an activity diagram to document these flows through the use case.

  • Produce an activity diagram to cover the registration of a volunteer over the web and the data transfer to the MetPool server.
  • Consider the use case Notify Member. Produce an activity diagram to describe the production of the letter, with date, volunteer's address, organization details, and description of the activity sought by the organization.

• Statechart Diagrams
  •     In the MetPool system, volunteering opportunities are registered, and matches are sought for people with time and skills that suit the opportunity. Opportunities can be open, partially filled, or filled. Volunteers may have to withdraw from an opportunity, or opportunity may require additional help from time to time. While the opportunity is open, or partially filled, an interviewing process can go on. This involves identifying potential volunteers, inviting them for an interview, considering candidates, and selecting them. For sensitive areas, there may be checking the candidates background or seeking references. Draw a statechart diagram with composite states to model the class Opportunity. 
  • In the MetPool system, volunteers may register and enter into volunteering agreements. Before MetPool allows volunteering, it checks that the volunteer is not prevented for some reason (say, by a previous disqualification from MetPool). Certain voluntary activities require additional checking before a volunteer can be matched against an opportunity. Volunteers may suspend membership for work reasons, or if they are temporarily moving out of MetPool's operational area. Volunteers may also withdraw or have their membership expire. Volunteers can also be expelled for reasons of misconduct. Draw a statechart diagram to model the class Volunteer.
