Welcome
to Academic and Professional Writing. You may be here because you enjoy writing
of all kinds, or because you don't like to write, especially in English, and
you know that you need to improve.
We will
start out together like a group of people going on a nature walk in the woods
together with binoculars and magnifying glasses. One person pauses to look closely
at a bird, another kneels down to study a wildflower, and some look around at
the other people in the group, wondering who these people are who are all so
different and yet united by a common interest. We are like people on a nature
walk because we will be practicing our powers of observation. Before we write,
we need to see, look, observe.
We will read and practice
different styles of writing. You can use these styles for whatever writing task
is at hand--at school, at work, in personal correspondence and writing. Whatever
environments and purposes there are for your writing, you will need to know
how to use the writing styles that we will study.
Our textbook will be Practice
Makes Perfect: Idiomatic English: A Workbook for Mastering Adjective Phrases,
Noun Phrases, Prepositional Phrases, Verb Phrases. The book will provide
you with many idiomatic phrases that will expand your vocabulary. During the
coming six weeks you will be responsible for completing three to four lessons
each week in the workbook.
You are free to combine
visual and verbal images in your writing. We will share our writing and images
in our class folder. Each of you will also have a folder of your own. I ask
that you submit something to the class folder weekly. Any writing that is not
ready to be shared can be kept in your personal folder. You will be responsible
for reading what your classmates have put into the class folder.
I look forward to sharing
this "Writing Walk" with you during the next six weeks.
