Marine Endolithic Cyanobacteria - 1

Petrographic thin section through an ooid grain, ca 0.5 mm diameter from ooid shoals at Joultar's Cays, near Andros Island Bahamas. Ooids are pearl-like spherical grains that form in layers over thousands of years. Note the emptied tunnels of microbial endoliths along the lower right edge of the grain. The dark spotted zone marks an earlier period of endolith activities that alternated with the carbonate accretion. (courtesy Dr. S.E. Campbell).
