Marine Endolithic Cyanobacteria - 2

An ooid sand grain, less than 0.5 mm across, contains an entire assemblage of endolithic cyanobacteria and other microorganisms that penetrate carbonate substrates. Microborings were embedded and cast in araldite, cured, cut open, and the surrounding carbonate removed by dilute hydrochloric acid. Shallow subtidal waters (ca 2m depth) off the coast of Saudi Arabia at Dhahran (cf. Al-Thukair & Golubic 1991a, b; Al-Thukair et al. 1994).
