Home Up Experiments & Lab Reports Animal Subjects Handling Rats Experimental Skills

Animal Subjects

Animals used in the laboratory are Holtzman male albino rats that were purchased from a commercial supply house. They are docile animals and have been raised in a germ free environment. They will be approximately 100 days old at the beginning of the semester.

The rats are individually housed in a special Animal Care Facility. They are fed Laboratory Rat Chow once a day for approximately one hour. This is an adequate diet and insures a high activity level for the experimental period. On experimental days, feeding will occur shortly after the laboratory session. Water is available in the home cage at all times.

All animals are numbered. Be sure to make a record of your subject’s number, and also write both your name and your lab partner’s name on the card that is attached to your rat’s cage. This will ensure that you use the same animal for each of the assigned experiments.
