Instructions for moving files from SRT computer to your account on another machine using FTP

  1. On the SRT computer's desktop, locate the icon in the lower left that is labelled "SSH Secure File Transfer"
  2. Double-click that icon to launch the SSH tool
  3. In the upper left of that tool's window, just under the top row of buttons, is a button labelled "Quick Connect"
  4. Single-click on that button
  5. A window pops up and requests information from you:
    1. "Hostname" is the name of the computer you wish to connect to (e.g, "astro.bu.edu", or "acs.bu.edu")
    2. "Username" is your user name on that computer
    3. After filling in those two windows, hit <CR> or click "OK"
    4. Another window *may* pop up that asks about "Host Indentification" - if it does, click its "Yes" button
    5. A window will pop up asking for your password on the computer you are connecting to
  6. After this login dialog, the SSH tool will fill with side-by-side lists of files. The left hand side shows files on the SRT computer; the RHS shows files on the remote computer
  7. Use regular file navagation methods, including the up arrow button, to navagate to the necessary directories on the SRT and the remote computer
  8. Select files on the SRT computer you wish to move, using the mouse, and either drag them across to the RHS, -or- do right click, select "copy" and then reposition the cursor onto the RHS, do a right click and select "paste" to move the files
  9. Verify that the files you want have appeared in the RHS file list
  10. Close the SSH window - if it tells you it is still connected and asks if it should be closed, click "yes"
