Carolyn Dillon joined the faculty in 1982, helping integrate into the curriculum content on health, mental health, PTSD, and use of videotaping in clinical education. She teaches longer-term models of practice within the curriculum, and has been a sought-after speaker and clinical consultant at many social work agencies, schools, and meetings. A graduate of Duke University, Professor Dillon received her MSW from Smith College School Of Social Work, is a board-certified Diplomate of the American Board of Examiners In Clinical Social Work, and in 1998 was recipient of a Boston University School of Social Work Alumni Association award for outstanding contributions to the School. Recent publications include (with Dr. Bianca Cody Murphy) Interviewing In Action (Brooks/Cole); and A Relational Perspective On Mutuality and Boundaries In Clinical Practice with Lesbians, in Laird, Joan (1999) Lesbians & Lesbian Families (Columbia University Press). Current Semester Courses SSW CP 781 Clinical Social Work Assessment and Intervention This course deepens the process of differential assessment and intervention with individuals, dyads, and families in an urban practice environment. It emphasizes psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and family systems constructs as they impact professional use of self as illustrated through videotapes, role play, and case discussion related to student and instructor experience in field. SSW CP 798 Advanced Clinical Practice with Adults This course relates relational and self psychological theory to assessment and longer term treatment of individual adults. The understanding and use of empathy as an assessment tool and as a medium of mutual exchange are emphasized, and attention is given to the impact on adult development and adaptation of oppression, trauma, and lack of community and institutional supports. Doctoral Student Teaching Seminar This continuing, twice-monthly seminar for doctoral teaching assistants within the School uses readings, discussion, and in vivo experiences to illuminate the structuring, delivery, technology, and process of social work curriculum.
