Introduction to Mask-Works

Trevor and Grant offer a repertoire of choreographed pieces in mask which explore universal themes touching on faith and life in a striking and surprisingly moving way. The masks clarify meaning by pairing back excessive movement. Startling in their economy, minute gestures attain great power.

Trevor and Grant devise new work to suit specific occasions. Most of these 'snapshots' of life are 5-10 minutes in length. It is the ideal medium to lift the lid on themes being explored whether at a conference, seminar, or other special interest event.

What People are Saying about Mask-Works

"Mask-Works main-stage presentations at the 1999 Victorian Christian Youth Convention were the highlight of the morning sessions. 100% of the 277 people surveyed rated the workshop as satisfactory or better with more than two thirds rating it as excellent. Trevor and Grant’s energy and enthusiasm coupled with their experience and passion allows them to communicate with people in a way that impacts them permanently. They are teachers who are concerned that their watchers be learners. Their ingenuity provided us all with a sense of wide-eyed fascination as well as moments of breathtaking fear. We will be inviting them back and I would commend them to anyone who wants to impact people in a powerful way!" (Julian Dunham, Co-Director VCYC, Associate Pastor Mornington Baptist Church, 12 February 1999)

Mask-Works Performances

Here is a sampling of Mask-Works performance pieces.

Gethsemane

A dynamic blend of music, mime, and mask explores the contrasting emotions involved in Jesus' conflict and ultimate surrender on the night before Calvary. A thought provoking piece opening up the potential for all of us to reflect on the significance of Easter in our own lives.

Feed the Hungry

Suspended in mid air a masked figure attempts to free itself from the rope it is tied to in order to get bread from ‘inside’ the church. This piece raises question about how we offer the gospel to a hungry world and explores how church culture may very well get in the way!

Saying Goodbye

Old character faced with packing his belongings to 'leave' is seen in a reflective time and sad moment as he battles to deal with the changes ahead. His younger son struggles accepting the grief of the situation. Both eventually 'leave'.

Life Cycle

Explores ideas related to mask wearing. Should we? Do we choose? Can we take them off? Masks distort our view of the world and its perception of us. God sees beyond the masks and that is a freeing experience!
