Teaching the Italian-American Experience (This course was approved by FSC, and I was hired to teach it, but it was cancelled at the last minute because of low enrollment.)
This course is designed in accordance with the History and Social Science Curriculum Frameworks. I will meet the needs of educators in developing in their students an understanding and appreciation of the history and achievements of this country's Italian-American population. Through a survey of literary and historical texts, narrative and documentary film, and archival and statistical data, the impact of Italian immigration on our nation's culture and economy will be examined. Teachers of elementary, middle, and high school will come together to examine, evaluate and develop instructional materials relevant to the Italian-American experience to be used in the classroom. Whether the class is tenth-grade history, second-grade language arts, or seventh-grade music, teachers will find this course useful in developing course material. As a result, students will better understand and appreciate the relevance of Italian-American history.
RL 003 Elementary Italian I. Conducted in Italian. The purpose of this course is to introduce the students to Italian language and culture. In the first semester students will learn the Italian sound system and the rudiments of vocabulary and grammar necessary for basic communication. The approach is communicative, and while memorization and mechanical practice is required, the greater part of class time will be dedicated to practicing acquired knowledge in a conversational and contextualized atmosphere. This course is for those who have not studied Italian previously. Students with prior Italian experience admitted only by placement test. Taught Fall 1993, Fall 1994.
RL 004 Elementary Italian II. Conducted in Italian. Admitted by placement test, consent of instructor, or completion of RL 003. This course is a continuation of RL 003 and further develops the goals of the first semester. Special attention is given this to the production more complex speech, the expression of personal opinion and a deeper knowledge of contemporary Italian culture. More formal writing exercises and reading of authentic texts aid students in reinforcing language skills. A group final project at the end of the course attempts to bring together the themes and experiences from previous study. Taught Spring 1994 and Spring 1995.
