Dear Parent or Guardian,
If your child is taking part in the Kids Voting Program in your
community this fall, they are participating in a unique opportunity
to learn about voting and the electoral process through lessons
and democratic activities at school and the opportunity to vote
on a Kids Voting ballot at the polls on Election Day. This program
teaches children about the value of voting as well as the requirements
and procedures for voting, and develops critical thinking and decision-making
skills. Recent research has demonstrated that the skills and habits
your child will acquire during the program are enduring and significant.
As part of the project, your child will study the candidates and
issues of this campaign. Please plan to spend some time with your
child discussing the candidates and issues and gathering information
from television, newspapers and magazines. Your involvement will
enhance your child's participation in Kids Voting.
The culminating activity for children will be the actual vote. All
communities participating in the Kids Voting program have made arrangements
with the election officials for students to vote at the polls on
Election Day. However, because each child must be accompanied by
an adult, please plan now so that you or another adult can take
your child to vote. If you have questions about the project or would
like to volunteer, please do not hesitate to call or e-mail me or
the local coordinator for your community (Boston,
Cape Cod, Holyoke,
Peabody, Plymouth,
Quincy, Richmond,
Scituate,
Springfield,
Stoughton).
Kids Voting is a wonderful vehicle for fulfilling our mutual responsibilities
to prepare our youth to become active citizens!
Sincerely,
Dr. Michael Hannahan, Chair
Kids Voting Massachusetts
