Research and Field Experience

2004 – 2006  Funded and organized research expeditions to the South Pacific to collect samples for dissertation research. 

2002 – 2007  Graduate Research Assistant – Boston University Marine Program.    

                      Collected, managed and sequenced samples of marine organisms from Indonesia for NSF CAREER award to Dr. Paul Barber.

2001 – 2002 Staff Research Associate – U.C. Berkeley Integrative Biology Department.

                     Performed field and laboratory work evaluating pesticide effects on fish in the Sacramento Delta.

2000           Benthic Laboratory Intern – Dauphin Island Sea Lab

                     Assisted in fieldwork and sample processing for an experiment assessing the effects of nutrient availability and predator control on seagrass meadows in the northern Gulf of Mexico.

2000           Aquatic Ecology Intern – National Park Service

                     Assisted the park aquatic ecologist with aquatic monitoring projects.

1998           Biology and Geomorphology of Tropical Islands – U.C. Berkeley

                     Undergraduate research project on osmotic tolerance of larvae of amphidromous neritid snails in Moorea, French Polynesia

1996           Research Assistant – University of Oregon

                                  Collected data on recruitment of juvenile barnacles from the field, cultured barnacle larvae, conducted independent research project.

 

Outreach and Educational Activities

2006 – 2007   Wrote and co-organized two teaching laboratories for Boston area high   schools, reaching over 300 students.

2003 – 2004   Wrote and presented inquiry based biology curriculum as a co-teacher at urban Chelsea High School as an NSF GK-12 Fellow.

2002 – 2007   Assisted in developing a new course in Molecular Ecology, ran the laboratory component, teaching molecular methods and helped to guide students through independent projects.

1997 – 2001   Internships with the Monterey Bay Aquarium, National Park Service and the East Bay Regional Park District focused on environmental education and natural history interpretation.

  2007                Reviewer for Journal of Experimental Marine Biology

  2003 – 2005    Served as liaison to the faculty and coordinated seminars and activities    with students at the Woods Hole Oceanagraphic Institute as Vice President of Boston University Marine Program Student Association

2003                Organized a larval dispersal journal club that brought together researchers  from 4 different scientific institutions in the Woods Hole area.
