Fall Welcome 2009: An introduction to UPA and upcoming events. We also administered a paper survey to see what members would like to see this year, and we raffled off a free Kaplan GRE course.
Kaplan GRE/Grad School Info Session, Fall 2009: Our Kaplan rep explained the GRE and what to expect, as well as what to think about when applying to graduate programs.
Registration101, Fall 2009: An open discussion about registration, what classes to take for the psychology major, and what professors to take (or not).
Making the Most of Your Undergraduate Years, Fall 2009: E-Board members created a handout and presented all of the areas psychology majors could explore, in order to make the most out of their time at BU, including: volunteer, internship, and research opportunities in Boston and at BU, study abroad, UROP, directed study, work for distinction, and also what career services has to offer. Additionally, we had a first-year grad student in the clinical psychology PhD program at Suffolk come to share her experience applying to graduate schools and being a student.
Résumé and Cover Letter Writing Workshop, Fall 2009: We had a representative from career services come to give a general workshop on résumé and cover letter writing.
What to do with a BA in Psychology, Spring 2010: We had a light reception and then heard a lecture from Dr. Gerald Koocher about the different pathways a person could take with a BA in psychology (besides a clinical PhD route). He talked about jobs psychology majors are qualified to do straight out of college.
Psychology Research at BU, Spring 2010: We asked members who work in psychology labs on campus to present to fellow members in a discussion-style event on the experience they've had working in a lab at BU, how they got involved, what they've learned, what their duties are, etc. This was a great event because it showed members the diversity of the psychology labs on campus, as well as promoted unity in the group.
The Last Lecture, Spring 2010. By far our largest event, we asked Dr. David Shim to answer the question: "If you knew you had only one last lecture to give, what would you say?" The premise of this lecture was based on a series of lectures where top academics answered the same question. Dr. Shim's lecture, "Redefining Happiness" talked about how to be truly happy and not allow your emotions to rely on external factors, but rather on the relationships you have with yourself and other people.
