Vaisakhi is one of the most significant holidays in Sikh calendar, commemorating the birth of the Khalsa in 1699. It also marks the beginning of the harvest season in Punjab. Join us for a fun-filled day with food, dance performances, henna tattoos, turban tying, dancing and much more!

Never Forget 84 Remembrance Vigil

This year marked the 25th anniversary of the 1984 Sikh Massacre. During November 1984 India was struck by a government led national massacre of the Sikh population. In Delhi alone, 4,000 were killed and almost 60,000 were left homeless. The national numbers reached well into thousands and justice has still not been served.
This event invited everyone to come out and remember those who died and the horrific brutality that took place 25 years ago.
The vigil consisted of a guest speaker, langar (dinner) and the recitation of sacred hymns (kirtan).
Movie Screening - Amu
Date: Sunday, November 8th, 2009

Location: GSU - BU Central
Directed by Shonali Bose, Amu is a film created to uncover the brutality of 1984 through the story of a young college student. Kaju, a 21-year-old Indian American woman, returns to India to visit her family, only to stumble upon secrets and lies from her past. A horrifying genocide that took place 20 years ago turns out to hold the key to her mysterious origins.
The film screening was followed by a short discussion.
Sikhs and Bollywood

We discussed the portrayal of Sikhs in Bollywood films. With movies such as Singh Is King and Rocket Singh out, it is time to sit back and think about the role of minorities in such a major film industry.
