Women's Dinghy Nationals

We finished 6th at the Women's Championships (tied for 5th). We struggled early and managed to settle down, consistently grinding back the rest of the regatta (we were in 12th at the end of the first day). Kaya Haig and Kirsten Rufleth finished third in B division, Liz Willis and Annie Arroyo finished 13th in A division. Kaya and Kirsten were solid the whole way through but we've seen them go faster. Liz and Annie had many difficulties the first day (starts, DSQ, OCS) but I'm proud of how they shook them off and put it together for the rest of the event. The event was sailed in 420's in medium to light air. We would have preferred a little more breeze (we would have preferred FJ's too, but you get what you get and you deal). On the first day the breeze was very hard to read on the water. The shifts had no pattern, persistent or oscillating who knew. There were holes through the middle, risk on the corners and uncertainty all around. The breeze settled down a lttle the rest of the way, the puffs were registering on the water but with still no pattern to speak of. Tactics were obviously important but took a back seat to boatspeed. BU simply wasn't as fast as some of their competitors. We worked through it, but we gave away too much early in the event.
