How's everyone feeling out there? We're doing just fine, thanks. There have been so many things that have impressed me this week, it's hard to know where to start. Let's start with this...
Stan Schreyer on the podium, giving an acceptance speech on behalf the team and with much sincerity, thanking our Alumni for their tremdous support.
Rich Bell and Kaya Haig, an hour after the last race, busy on the phones, trying to get the word out to the Alumni. Expressing their urgent need to share this with you. Those Alumni getting the word, organizing celebration parties of their own.
I was impressed with how well the team got along, worked together, supported each other not only at the regatta but also at the condos. It's not easy to cook, clean, do laundry, drive, and organize for 16 people over 12 days. Coach was active in this department as well, cooking our only hot breakfasts (french toast), roasting four turkeys and a chicken used for lunches the following day, and providing 7am cleaning services (laundry, dishwasher, bottle clean-up, trash, lunch preparation).
It was all about good placement on the line (earning their clear air) and raw boat speed. Brian and Kirsten were on fire. Stan and Rich needed adjustments in the light stuff and took care of business in the breeze. We made two impressive last beat comebacks early in the event and then got stronger as the regatta wore on. The "favorites" waited for us to falter but it never happened. No protests, no circles, only one over-early (we pulled out a 4th), solid tactics. We were the kings of consistency and earned everything we got. NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!
