The Boston University Dinghy Sailors are the club sailing team at Boston University. We compete at the varsity level with other colleges and universities throughout New England and the United States in both one and two day regattas. The BUDS are in the New England (NEISA) district of the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA). Our home waters are on the Charles River in Boston, Massachusettes between the Boston University and Massachusettes Avenue (Harvard) Bridges. We practice in a fleet of eighteen brand new Vanguard Flying Juniors (FJ's) with all new Harken hardware and North Sails. For a complete listing of boats and facilities, see the links below. The BUDS practice on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 2:00PM until 6:00PM (or until darkness falls). Our sailing season is in both fall and spring. Regattas begin in early September and go until Mid-November. The Spring season begins in early March and continues to the end of the school year (and beyond when qualified for the post-season such as Team Racing, Women's, or Coed Nationals). The Boston University Dinghy Sailors are the most successful team at Boston University. In the past 20 years, we have won seven national titles and have produced more all-americans than any other sport at the university. We have graduated three national "Sailors of the Year" and one "Sportsman of the Year". For further details, click on the links below. If you have a question, comment, or require more specific information about the BUDS, please see our recruiting page.
The onshore classes were taught at BU, while the offshore classes remained at Community Boating. In 1967, when the Boston University Crew Team moved to a new facility, the sailing team moved into the old crew boathouse. This facility was built in 1940, due in large part, to a student named Jim Conlon. Jim, a Boston University Crew team member, began lobbying for a small, inexpensive (less than $50,000) structure to harbor the Crew team. Three years later, the Boathouse was complete.
