’99-2009 :: WBUR, Boston’s NPR news station (http://www.wbur.org). Director of New Media, managing a team of producers, developers and designers to bring the work of 90.9 WBUR onto the Web. Since 1999 the New Media Department has developed wbur.org from a brochure site that delivered several thousand page views a week of station information, into a news site that delivers over 1.5 million page views and 200,000 hours of streaming audio a month. The site delivers an extensive range of news and features, photo-galleries, and multimedia sections. The team strives to explore and use the latest technologies to make any content crafted at WBUR available to as broad an audience as possible through all new media channels.
'97-’99 :: E-Monitor (http://www.csmonitor.com). Producer for the on-line edition of The Christian Science Monitor, working with a small team of producers and journalists to produce the content of the newspaper on-line every day, adapting the stories, special sections and features to make them work on the Web. At this time the team was also looking for ways to develop special on-line features for coverage of events such as the mid-term elections in 1998.
'96-'97 :: University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Sabbatical spent researching new media, film, video, and history.
'95-'96 :: Worldwide Television News. Senior Producer, Nairobi, providing front-line coverage of Africa from Somalia to Liberia. Also reported from Bosnia and the UAE. In charge of running WTN's Nairobi bureau, covering news (May '96 fighting in Monrovia, January '96 separation of forces in Bosnia, August '95 refugee expulsions from Zaire, etc.), and arranging client facilities and productions. Extensive experience recording, editing and feeding TV stories to Europe from hostile and unpredictable places.
'89-'94 :: Foreign Correspondent, reporting from more than twenty countries in Africa, Central America and the Caribbean. Filing breaking news and features in radio and print to the United States and Britain.
From Africa: Coverage including crises in Somalia and Rwanda, and elections in South Africa. Radio documentaries for CBC's Sunday Morning (Canada). Spot news for ABC Radio News (US). News and features for Pacifica Network News, The National Catholic Reporter, The Fort Worth Star Telegram, and The Chronicle of Higher Education.
From Central America: Correspondent for The Economist magazine (UK) and The Daily Telegraph (UK) including coverage of the Salvadoran rebel offensive of November '89, the Nicaraguan elections in February '90, Central American summits and the peace process in El Salvador. Also contributor to US radio stations, newspapers and magazines including ABC, The Christian Science Monitor, Time, The St Petersburg Times, The Fort Worth Star Telegram and others. Pictures carried in many US papers including, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The San Francisco Examiner, The LA Times, etc.
