What initiatives do the Friends plan to fund for the upcoming season?

Our immediate goal is to raise money to pay for 4 of the 6 coaches' salaries and this is what your 2008-2009 contribution will go towards:  qualified, committed coaches who will make us successful on the water and also prepare us for life's challenges.  We hope to raise $20,000 for coaches' salaries.

What do the Friends need to pay for?

The Friends have paid about $27,000 each season in operating expenses.
These include:
  • $20,000 in coaches salaries;
  • $4,000 to insure boats;
  • $2,000 to 4,000 to maintain and repair eight boats; and
  • Fund scholarships, awarded on an as-needed basis.
The Friends pay for 100% of all equipment.
  • A new racing shell costs in excess of $30,000.
  • Over the next several years, we need to buy more launches.  This will cost $10,000.
  • A new set of oars costs $2,600.  In 2007 an oar snapped depriving one of our varsity boats of victory.
  • A cox box for a boat costs $500.

Why do the Friends assess a fee for food served at regattas or hotel overnights when each parent pays BHS an athletic fee of $175 each spring season?

  • The athletic fee goes to BHS which in turn pays some of our operating expenses such as the rental payment to the Riverside Boat Club, a portion of coaches' salaries, and most of the costs of transporting boats and athletes to regattas.
  • Funds that we raise or contribute go towards paying our operating expenses and capital equipment.

What about other program expenses?

  • A fee is paid for varsity athletes to participate in the winter training program.
  • The annual varsity girls' trip to Texas over February vacation is paid by the parents of each athlete.
  • Assessed food fees feed our kids during regattas, many of which are all day events.
  • The Friends provide scholarships when needed.
