eaching Compassion
Parents want even very young children to care about other people's suffering, but they don't want them to feel extremely upset or helpless.
A useful exercise is to have children save a small percentage of their allowances to a "Help Other Children Fund." When a hurricane, war or other disaster strikes and children are hurt, most newspapers have addresses for donations. A church, synagogue or mosque may have addresses or special funds. Your children can choose to donate their "Help Other Children Fund" money to their particular cause.

Actively helping others who are suffering helps children feel less helpless and more connected to other people in the world even if they do not know them. It makes disasters less frightening, because children know others will help them in their time of need.
