Dear Iranian American Community,
IAB is proud to host Dr. Nassim Assefi during her book tour to the East Coast this coming Sunday. Dr. Assefi is a women's health specialist and medical school professor who's just returned from 2 years of humanitarian work in Afghanistan. Her novel Aria (published by Harcourt and 5 foreign presses including a Persian translation) is the story of Jasmine Talahi, a highly successful but deracinated Iranian-American woman, who returns to Iran despite her fear of the country and her estranged relationship with her parents after personal tragedy strikes (in her case, the death of her child). Lacking religious scaffolding, comforting rituals, and a supportive family, Jasmine is unable to heal from her terrible losses until she confronts her past, makes peace with her Iranian heritage by visiting Iran, and reconnects with her family. Dr. Assefi has been touring the country, using the novel and her public health experience in Iran and Afghanistan as a platform from which to speak positively about Iranian culture. A portion
of her royalties will benefit the National Iranian-American Council and an Afghan orphanage. For more information about Dr. Assefi and her book, please go to: www.nassimassefi.com
