Welcome to the Laboratory of MicroStratigraphy at Boston University. This facility focuses on the microscopic aspects of geological and archaeological sediments and soils. It emphasizes techniques used in Micromorphology and FTIR-Microscopy to examine the depositional and post-depositional aspects of these deposites as a means to reconstruct site formation processes operating at any prehistoric and archaeological site. These approaches can also be used to examine the composition and nature of archaeological materials (e.g., adobe, mortar) with the goal of understanding past technologies. The laboratory has access to other analytical capabilities at Boston University, such as X-Ray Diffraction, ICP-MS, and SEM.
