I attend Boston University’s Master in Public Health program. Last semester I learned about the elder care system in the United States. Six million people are over the age of 65 and require long-term care and our country does not have a plan to meet the needs of these senior citizens.
A month after I attended class about the care of elders, my grandfather fell down and was taken to the hospital. He lives in Florida, while my dad lives in North Carolina. Over the last few months I have watched my father face the challenges of trying to provide adequate and appropriate care for my grandfather from a distance. It is sad and frustrating and as the baby boomers become senior citizens this inefficient system of elder care is bound to get worse. I am left hoping that this blog can help generate ideas for individuals who are unsure of how to approach the care needed for their elder parents. (read more entries)
