Program Format
Participants are appointed Fellows of the Institute for one year. Each
Fellow participates in the core and then, working with an executive
coach, customizes the rest of their development agenda.
The Core: The core program consists of 3 an 4 day modules. The
modules provide each participant with an overview of the new economy,
the changing face of strategy, and the mandates of leadership.
Module I: The Strategic Context
Each individual comes to this session having identified a key strategic
initiative that has significant impact and is focused on organizational
performance. During the session they work with 5-6 faculty, other subject
matter experts, and their peers to understand the strategic principles
and radical shifts that apply to the world in which they are competing.
Module II: Meeting the Leadership Challenge
Having done some testing and application back in their own companies,
participants are part of a process that helps them reflect and synthesize
what they have learned. They work with faculty, executives, and other
Fellows who have comparable issues. Executive coaches help the groups
and individuals re-define their application projects and personal development
agendas to insure additional progress within their corporations.
Module III: Leveraging Capability
Participants will develop and test new processes of leadership and
how they can be used and leveraged. Supported by their core support team
(faculty core member, executive coach, and common challenge group), participants
will document key learnings and insights and then present them to executive
colleagues.
The Application Groups: Each Institute Fellow will also
participate in an Application Group composed of 5-7 other Fellows and
led by a senior faculty member. The groups are composed around common
interest areas and are designed for in-depth analysis and application
in critical areas. The application groups will meet between the Modules
and will also be linked with each other using technology and video conferencing
capability. Topics of application groups are driven by participant needs,
but will often include topics such as:
- Real Options and Financial Strategy
- Implementing Information Technology Strategy
- Globalization vs. Localization
- E-Commerce and Competing in the New Economy
- Driving Organizational Transformation
- Fast Cycle Customer Responsiveness
- Attraction and Retention of Key Talent
- Mobility
The Master Seminars: Over the past decade Boston University
has developed significant relationships with senior executives who have
been master leaders in their own organizations. A select group has agreed
to conduct Master Seminars to share and explore what they have
learned during their careers.
The Partners Program: Leadership Institute Fellows will
be able to participate in any of the Boston Universitys School of Management
Research Centers during the year of their participation in the Institute.
The current Centers are:
- The Systems Research Center
- The Center for Leading in the New Economy
- The Center for Enterprise Leadership
- The Asian Management Institute
- The Michael Bronner E-Business Center & Hatchery
- The Human Resource Policy Institute
- The Executive Development Roundtable
Customizing the Learning Agenda
Participants will work with an executive coach to help them properly
configure which components, and what level of involvement, will be most
beneficial to their learning. The executive coaches will work with participants
throughout the year to make sure they maximize their development experience
both at the Institute and within their organization.
