Project: Eating Disorders in Veterans: Risk, Resilience, and Service Use
Role: PI

This study will examine the prevalence of eating disorders and identify veteran-specific risk and protective factors for eating disorders in a nationally representative sample of male and female Veterans from all service eras.

Specific aims:

1.    To determine the scope of the problem of EDs in a nationally representative sample of Veterans of all eras of service.

2.    To identify VA-specific service use and needs among male and female Veterans with full and subthreshold EDs.

3.    To identify the impact of Veteran-specific risk and protective factors for ED symptoms and to investigate gender similarities and differences in these models.

4.    To validate an existing screening measure of EDs across eras of service.

Project: Eating Disorders in Veterans: Prevalence, Comorbidity, Risk, and
Healthcare Use
Role: Initiating PI

This study investigates prevalence of eating disorders, comorbid diagnoses, risk factors for eating disorders, and validity of eating disorder screening measures in recently separated male and female veterans.

1. a) To examine the prevalence of full and subthreshold EDs among recently separated male and female Veterans, b) To examine the proportion of full and subthreshold EDs among vulnerable subgroups of Veterans, and c) (exploratory) To compare temporal associations among EDs and comorbid disorders, including PTSD, depression, anxiety, and alcohol and substance use disorders.

2.  a) Document treatment patterns and healthcare needs/preferences among male and female Veterans with probable full or subthreshold ED diagnoses, b) Compare treatment patterns for Veterans with probable full and subthreshold ED diagnoses to Veterans without ED diagnoses, and c) Identify barriers to care for Veterans seeking mental health treatment in general and for EDs specifically.

3.  To identify the impact of general and military/Veteran-specific risk and maintenance factors for EDs.

4.  To validate and compare two existing screening measures of EDs in a Veteran sample.
