Dr. Chris Helfrich's interests are in the areas of mental health and community practice.

She values engaged scholarship in the community where her research focuses on the impact of domestic violence and homelessness on function across the lifespan, service provision in underserved areas and the experiences of occupational therapy consumers. She has developed a series of life skills interventions which are undergoing efficacy studies. She is a member of the Occupational Therapy in Mental Health Editorial Board, a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Foundation and a recipient of the Illinois Occupational Therapy Association's Award of Merit.
