Dorchester Project

We have recently partnered with our Greater Boston Habitat affiliate to work on a revitalization project of a Dorchester neighborhood.

The Problem:
With the crumbling economy Boston, along with many other areas across the country, is facing a foreclosure crisis.  Dorchester in particular has been plagued by rampant foreclosures resulting in the deterioration of its local communities.  In a three block radius, there are fifteen foreclosed houses.  These houses attract squatters and vandals which in turn detract interest from nearby properties.  Crime rates have increased and the general aesthetic appeal of the neighborhood has significantly declined.

“The foreclosed properties on Dacia Street are an eyesore, resting alongside beautiful new buildings with units for rent and historic homes that have been in the same family for several generations…One neighbor said one of the boarded up homes was a popular site for squatters and was used ‘as a shooting gallery.’”
GREG ST. MARTIN, THE BOSTON METRO, MAY 14, 2008

Our Solution:
Boston Habitat plans to buy up eight of these fifteen foreclosed houses, renovate them, and sell them to families in need with affordable, interest-free mortgages.  We are fundraising to raise the $50,000 necessary to sponsor one of these houses on Dacia St. in Dorchester.  This will provide a home for a family in need as well as save the whole neighborhood.  With your help we can vastly improve the lives of those families in Dorchester affected by this foreclosure crisis!
