Our next meeting will be on Thu, Apr 16 at 6pm. --Rob Summary ======= 1. Survey Fran Altvater has received some comments on the format and content of the survey from those on the mailing list. The only major change we'll be making to the survey is to reorder the different sections of the survey. The other changes are only minor changes to the content. Our timetable is to have the survey completely edited and ready for distribution in less than 2 weeks (probably sooner). Distribution of the survey will be done in paper form and we'll rely heavily on someone from each dept. (e.g., someone on the mailing list) to help drum up enthusiasm for the survey, get the surveys out to dept. grads, and collect them as well. Once the surveys are all collected, the survey group will analyze and summarize the results. Additionally, if anyone would like to join the survey group, please send mail to survey@gso.bu.edu. 2. Social events For the rest of the semester, we have 2 more pub nights, and hopefully, a movie night. Note that the social group was able to get a little money from GRS for this next pub night in order to buy some snacks. This movie night is something that will be paid for by Student Advantage (they have those discount cards) and Cablevision. We hope to have a free movie showing (possibly at the Nickelodeon) along with free food. The social group will give more details as this becomes finalized. We also hope to do some fun things during the summer. Certainly, any suggestions are welcome at social@gso.bu.edu. Finally, we welcome any additional volunteers who would like to help plan, promote, and run social events. We rely heavily on those of you on the mailing list to help us get the word out to your fellow dept. grads. 3. Meetings with Deans Gary Garber gave us more information about the type of meeting Dean Berkey wants to have with us (i.e., as a followup to the meeting with Assoc. Dean Whittaker in which we discussed making our group more official and getting some money). The dean seems to want a meeting with students in general (grads and undergrads) to discuss issues that concern them. We are hoping to get a meeting with just grads since we feel that undergraduate issues are often very different than our own. Since we've had an initial meeting with Whittaker, where Gary and Mike Hayes described some of our ideas (e.g., a grad orientation), we'd give a little bit more detail about each of these plans at a meeting with Berkey. One of the ideas Gary and Mike presented was to create a grad-only lounge. If you have a suggestion for a good location, we'd like to here about it. We'd prefer something that is mainly central to all the GRS depts. (e.g., in the CAS building). Although Whittaker was against funding coming from a small grad student "due", we still want to promote this possibility since the current situation in which they plan to allocate some money to us allows the administration a large amount of control over how we use this money. Gary feels that despite Dean Berkey's desire for a meeting, we will largely deal with Assoc. Dean Whittaker and that the assoc. dean seems to have a positive attitude about the things we want to do.
