Your final project is due on your discussion session during the week of April 7th to April 11th.We are expecting at least 2 typed copies. The report should be at least 4 pages long and not longer than 8 pages, including everything you want to put in.
Basically what you have to do is to look for the kind of data we have been talking about during the courseand try to understand the macroeconomic situation of this country. The report should contain the following sections (feel free to include other parts and to structure the report in the style you think it is moreappropriate, but include these parts):
Your work must be objective in the sense that your data are accurate and your arguments are based on positive analysis. Nevertheless, all your arguments should be made towards a normative statement: the mutual fund company should/should not pick this countryfor investing.
The first thing you should do is to start looking for data. For series on GDP and prices I personally suggest the Penn World Tablethough many other web sources are available. The only problem with the PWT is that you may easily find long time series of data for almost all countries there, but they might end 2, 3 or 5 years ago. This can clearly be frustrating when trying to answer the main question of your report, i.e. whether we should invest there. For more recent data and forecast for the next year you might have a look at the Financial Times or at the Economist. weekly indicators.
You might even want to look for other data as the UN Development Index and many other more. Please be always sure you understand what the data are about: is the GDP real or nominal? Is the growth rate yearly, monthly or quarterly?Does it refer to the last quarter only or to the average of the last year?
You might want to look for articles on your country, but do not copy them. Use them as an inspiration.
Write clearly, be professional but never boring. Try to make it interesting. Feel free to be short on things that have no relevance to your pointand longer where necessary. Try to anticipate the reader objections. Make yourself the counterargument and show that it is not correct or not enough.
Enjoy your work. This is a creative opportunity for you to show your talent and your willingness to accept challenges. Do not miss it!
