SRF2007 -- Program Posted!!!

In 2007, the SRF will return to its roots on the historic peninsula of Cape Cod. The conference is scheduled for May 17-19, 2007 at the lovely Ocean Edge Resort in Brewster, MA. The location is approximately 95 miles (2 hours) from either Boston, MA or Providence, RI (for all you Southwest fans).

Rooms will be $150 per night (SRFers need to call in to make reservations and indicate that they are part of the SRF New York University group) plus ~$100-125 conference fees (payable to Rob Salomon). Car rentals are probably the best transport option, but shuttles are available at the airports. Given the distance from Boston, we encourage you to share rides. Also, the rates were negotiated based on a 20 room minimum guarantee, so if you can take your own room, we would appreciate it. Conference fees go up significantly if we are not able to meet the minimum. And as always, dinners are likely to be offsite and a good time will surely be had by all.

THE SRF STORY

At a large conference eight years ago, we spent some recreation time lamenting the fact that most large conferences are just…well, too large. By necessity, they consist of presentations that are too short to allow the exchange of ideas that attracted us to academe in the first place.

After grousing in this fashion for several hours, we realized that we need not rely on large, impersonal conferences to meet our need for intellectual stimulation. Armed with a conference room, some coffee, and about 20 equally committed scholars, we could put on quite a show! To test this hypothesis, we invited about 30 friends to a 2-day retreat in Gloucester, Massachusetts, in the hopes that 15 would attend.  We were wrong – nearly 25 scholars participated! Flushed with success, we decided to do it again, with a slightly larger group. Success again!  And again and again and again and again and again! Now we plan to test whether lightning can strike nine times in a row.
