Politics
ESO's political action initiative is an umbrella term encompassing several environmental campaigns. ESO uses nonviolent action and negotiation to achieve its political action goals. ESO's political action campaigns include: Green Voting!!!We need political leaders who are willing to fight for our natural resources, health, and future. Instead of complaining that current politicians aren't making strides toward solving the climate crisis, get out and VOTE. Vote green!!! There is a bill in the Massachussetts Senate that we are trying to push. It calls to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the state by 90% by 2050. Come to the meetings to help out. To learn about the environmental views of your representatives visit the Massachusetts League of Environmental Voters website. If you would like to take action, and sign a petition about an environmental issue, there are several large non-profits online that can help: Environmental Defence is a non-profit that combines economics and environmentalism to come up with political goals that will benefit everyone. They have campaigns on issues ranging from Global Warming to protecting Hawaiian monk seals. Other great organizations include the Sierra Club,Green Peace, Action Network, and Ecomall. If you want Al Gore's movie website, it's at climatecrisis.net. For anyone further interested in politics, the New York Times has a page devoted to the Environment, and posts recent Congressional votes on another. If your interested in news about Global Warming, there's a page devoted to that too. We've been quite political, and you can see us at a rally in D.C. below.
Green BuildingBU is planning a significant amount of construction over the next several years. This campaign, just in its infancy, will work with the administration with the intent of assuring that the building designs integrate the newest green building techniques and energy saving devices. ESO intends work to bring awareness of the importance of green building to the BU community. Many other universities around the Boston area, including Harvard, MIT, and Tufts, are integrating green building design into their buildings. Green building is not only good for the environment, it makes economic sense as well. For this reason, major corporations such as Ford are revamping their factories to be more efficient and "green". ESO would like to thank Barbra Bat Shalom, founder and director of the Boston green building non-profit group The Green Roundtable, for her invaluable help as a consultant on this project.
