Occupational therapy scholars, professionals, and students from across the country honored Ellen S. Cohn, OTR/L, FAOTA, at the 2011 American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) National Conference. Dr. Cohn received the distinguished A. Jean Ayres research award, which is conferred annually to two outstanding candidates who have demonstrated sustained commitment to the application, development, or testing of theory in occupational therapy. The award is given in honor of A. Jean Ayres, PhD, OTR, whose concentration on developing theory in support of practice was of great significance to the profession of occupational therapy.
Dr. Cohn has shown a significant and sustained commitment
to promoting best practice nationally and internationally, within and beyond
the occupational therapy field, by advancing theory and disseminating
occupational therapy knowledge. Her scholarship and service has enhanced the
understanding of occupational engagement patterns of children and youth, the
experiences of parents of children with special needs, research methodologies
within occupational science and occupational therapy practice, and clinical
reasoning as an element of reflective practice. She has influenced the
theoretical constructs included in numerous AOTA official documents and
exemplifies the qualities of an Ayres Award recipient. |

Dr. Ellen Cohn teaches courses related to clinical reasoning,
occupational therapy intervention, evidence-based practice, group leadership,
and critical analysis of theory and research in health, adaptation, and
disability. Her research focuses on parents' perspectives of intervention and
outcomes, and living with and parenting children with a range of diagnostic
conditions. She has published in the areas of clinical reasoning, fieldwork
education and supervision, and consumer perspectives. She is currently a
member of the American Journal of
Occupational Therapy Editorial Board, a coeditor of Willard and
Spackman’s Occupational Therapy, the AOTA Commission on Practice, and
a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association. |
