Professor Klepper

Summary Exercise I
Primary Source

Summarize The Song of Roland, laisses 1-135 (pp. 29-86) in approximately 350 words.

The purpose of this assignment is to help you to become more familiar with the text, to focus on narrative coherence, to identify themes running through the text, and to clarify the distinction between summary and interpretation, or argument. While summary may be a necessary part of an argument, students too often write summaries when they should be arguing. In this assignment do not establish and develop arguments for your own interpretation of the material. Rather, describe the text by determining the main points that the text communicates and presenting them in a concise and logically consistent manner, employing clear prose with appropriate transitional connections.
