Derin is a 4th-year PhD candidate in the Biomedical Engineering department at Boston Univeristy, under the mentorship of Professor Selim Unlu. He is currently developing a new approach for sensitive and multiplexed cancer genotyping. He is fellow of the Cross-disciplinary Training in Nanotechnology for Cancer (XTNC) program as well as a trainee of the GAANN nanobiotechnology program and Quantitative Biology and Physiology (QBP) programs at BU.

Derin received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University in 2011, graduating in three years. While there he studied the biomechanics of growth plate cartilage under the mentorship of Professor Larry Bonassar.

Previously, he worked as a systems engineer on the Cornell Violet nanosatellite project team for 18 months under the mentorship of Professor Mason Peck, now chief technologist at NASA.
