1984
The Most Horrifying Dystopia Novel Ever Written
"There will be no curiosity, no enjoyment of the process of life. All competing pleasures will be destroyed. But always — do not forget this, Winston — always there will be the intoxication of power, constantly increasing and constantly growing subtler. Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless. If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face …for ever."
The book 1984 takes place in Oceania, a fictional world power with a totalitarian government. Winston, the main character,
is a citizen of Oceania and strictly adheres to all of Oceania's laws. However, after buying a empty diary in the window of a
general store (and, therefore breaking the laws of Oceania), Winston begins to open his eyes to the injustice that Oceania harbors.
Originally banned in the USSR, 1984 was intended to be a criticism of totalitarian and communist governments. The book focused on
such themes as censorship, sexual repression, and the brutal nature of law enforcement.
