FAQ's

What is the BUFSC?

The Boston University FSC is a both a club at B.U. and a FSC registered with the USFS. Composed of about 60 members, this club is dedicated to the enjoyment and personal success of the figure skaters at B.U. We have a competition team that competes in several intercollegiate competitions on the east coast each year. The BUFSC has qualified for the National Intercollegiate Figure Skating Championships almost every year.

Why join?

Joining the BUFSC allows you to skate on club ice, which is held in the form of freestyles every weekday morning and afternoon, for FREE! Plus, the BUFSC is a great way to meet fellow skaters and future friends. This club supports and encourages its members in the unique world of collegiate skating, and you’ll have the chance to travel and compete at numerous colleges all over America.

How much does it cost?

To join the BUFSC (annual) : $135
To join USFS through BUFSC (annual) : $40 (see "Membership" for additional information)
Jackets and Bags (mandatory for all competitors) : about $120
(note that every member needs to join BUFSC, but some choose to join USFS through their home club and you only need to join USFS once each year)

Is it mandatory to practice or compete?

It is not usually mandatory to do anything. This club exists to support skaters in whatever they choose to do, whether that includes just skating for fun, skating in the BUFSC shows, or competing. Unfortunately, due to prior experiences, this year we have decided to make it mandatory for competitors to practice at least once a week during the spring semester. This is to ensure that the people who have said they will compete actually intend/ want to. It would be unfair to allow someone to compete who does not practice over, for example, a grad. student who does not have first priority getting a start but who is making her/his best effort to be ready to compete.
For those of you who are used to the extremely competitive world of singles figure skating, it might help to know that collegiate competitions are not nearly as stressful, nor are they as rigorously structured. As a college student, school should be your number one priority, and the judges, officials, and other skaters know this. Collegiate competitions are a lot of fun, and not just because you’ll get to travel with the awesome BU team!

What if I’m not sure I want to compete?

You should compete anyway! You have nothing to lose. In collegiate, you’ll take excruciating long van rides with your teammates, possibly experience being stranded in Delaware (as the team was in the ’06-’07 season), sit for hours and hours on hard, cold, rink seats, and possibly have some of the best times of your life. And you get to skate!

Synchronized skating is another terrific option, and it’s perfectly possible to compete in singles and synchro. For those of you who have never done synchro before, you’re highly encouraged to try it out because skating with a team is comparable to nothing else. For more information, check out the synchronized skating team’s website.

Is the Synchro team part of the BUFSC?

Yes! There is only one FSC on Boston University’s campus, and we’re it. The Synchro team does have their own executive board and budget etc., and Synchro competitions are held separately from singles and collegiate ones.
