2000 - 2001 Awards
The year started promisingly with Sarah Wilhite and Heather Williams capturing first novice team award at Harvard.losing only to Yale D, which eventually won the tournament. Heather placed ninth best novice speaker (128/12), and Sarah placed fourth in the same category (129/12).
At MIT, Brooke Feinberg and Kate Branch lost a bubble round and a possible break to quarters.
At Dartmouth, APDA felt BU's might. Both BU D (Jonathan Marcus and Jina Moore) and BU C (Heather Williams and Sarah Wilhite) captured novice team awards while Jonathan won best novice speaker award. BU beat reputable APDA teams and made a name for itself. With BU A (Mike Specian and Nikos Tsafos) and BU D placing in the top twenty teams, the name "BU" was heard way more times than even the largest optimist would hope for. BU A lost a bubble round to the NYU/Brandeis hybrid and missed the break to Quarters at the last minute. BU faced most of the teams that broke to Quarters, while BU B (Mike Ide and Brooke Feinberg) earned Storey Clayton's eternal respect for running, "the best case [he's] hit this year." Of course our heartfelt congratulations go to our friends from MIT, Amit and Raj, for winning the tournament.
At Wellesley, Jonathan Marcus and Jina Moore placed fifth best novice team.
At Stanford, Sarah Wilhite, debating as a hybrid, placed ninth best novice speaker.
At Mt. Holyoke, Jonathan and Mike Specian placed 14th best team overall going 3-2. They only lost rounds to Harvard A and Yale A, both of which were in the Finals. Their last round was against Yale A, which they lost by 1 point. Jonathan was the 7th best novice of the tournament.
At the National Debate Championship, BU was represented by Jonathan Marcus and Nikos Tsafos. Their record was 3-3, losing rounds to Yale A (Brian Fletcher and Scott Luftglass), Yale C (Adam Jed and Beth O'Connor), and UMBC A (Troy Berman + Chris Kelly) and missing a possible break to Octo-Finals in the last round.
